Big Lake: A Little Piece of Paradise

Mount Vernon, WA

Welcome to the tranquil shores of Big Lake, located five miles southeast of Mount Vernon. Big Lake is aptly named after its expansive freshwater lake and provides residents with breathtaking views, excellent fishing, and many recreational activities year-round. In addition, the community’s fire department puts on a fantastic fireworks show each July.

Big Lake is 520 acres in size and is the largest lake within Skagit County. Go fishing here and you can expect to find Yellow Perch, Black Crappie, and Largemouth Bass fairly easily and Coastal Cutthroat Trout, Coho Salmon, and Pumpkinseed Sunfish if you’re lucky. Fishing is allowed year-round and a ramp on the western shore of Big Lake provides access for boaters as well as a small dock for off/on loading.

Fireworks on the lake have been a huge part of the Big Lake history every 3rd of July since 1963. This popular annual event, started by a volunteer firefighter, is hosted by the Big Lake Firefighters Association and draws much of the community to the shores of Big Lake every year. Firefighters raise money prior to the event to pay for the fireworks show and to purchase needed equipment for the Fire Department. Arrive early to claim your spot!
